Summer Program 2009 - Children and Youth "My Ukraine" Art Contest

On August 9, 2009, The Ukrainian Community of Western Pennsylvania held the Children and Youth "My Ukraine" Art Contest in commemoration of the 18th Anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence from the Soviet Union.

Children and youth from 4 to 18 years old with a personal connection to Ukraine were invited to participate where they could draw upon their personal experiences living in and visiting Ukraine, or family stories or traditions that illustrated what Ukraine means to them.

Fifteen drawings and paintings were submitted. Judges of this Art Contest - local Artists Evhen Bohonok,  Yuliya Pawluk, and Connie Roman – met on August 8th to choose the winners in each age group. However, after viewing all art pieces, all three judges came to the conclusion that it was impossible to pick just one winner in each age group because all pieces were unique and all participants of this Art Contest are very talented. Therefore, all participants of this Art Contest became WINNERS!!!

Mrs. Roman stated the following regarding this Art Contest: "It was my honor to be asked to evaluate and judge the entries for 'My Ukraine', the art contest recently sponsored by UCOWPA. While growing up the eldest daughter of a large Ukrainian family, the presence of our country's powerful cultural past was all around me. It helped lead to my career as an art teacher and watercolorist.

What a joy it is to see the next generation carry on and recognize the traditions of their grandparents and parents through thoughtful expressions of art. I encourage them to learn about and engage in other medium of Ukrainian art such as embroidery and Easter egg decoration."

The Ukrainian Community of Western Pennsylvania congratulates all participants of this Art Contest and applauds our talented children and youth for their love and dedication to our Ukrainian culture and art.

Also, the following Pittsburgh Art Museums recognized our talented children and youth and awarded our young artists and their families with free admission tickets to their museums:

·         Carnegie Museum of Art
·         The Andy Warhol Museum
·         The Frick Art & Historical Center
·         The Mattress Factory Contemporary Art Museum
·         Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh

The UCOWPA also rewarded all participants with Certificates of Participation.
